How Are You Supposed To Study?
Professor Brittany L. Raposa, Associate Director of Bar Preparation and winner of the Professor of The Year for two years in a row at Roger Williams University School of Law, received responses from 126 of her 3Ls to see what their biggest concerns were surrounding taking a fall bar exam. Among the chief concerns were the following: 1. When to start studying 2. The need to work while studying 3. Using extra time to study without burning out 4. How to make productive use of the long period of time 5. How to navigate their commercial bar preparation course When speaking about the above concerns, Professor Raposa said the following: “We need cooperation with commercial bar prep companies to allow students early start date access who are taking a bar exam in the fall.” She went on to say that, as academic support professors, “we need to utilize the assistance of commercial bar review materials and each other.” When asked what she envisions for a fall bar exam, Professor Raposa stated that she imagined “intensive studying with a commercial bar course would likely begin in July. Introductory aspects of the course can be completed in early July, and intensive study likely begins by mid-July.” But what Professor Raposa would like to see is commercial courses offer intensive, commercial bar prep courses earlier than the suggested start date, especially for those who have to start work in August. She believes, “to increase first-time success of a student working full time, a lot of the ‘learning of the law’ through lectures should happen, if possible, before their work start date.” When asked specifically what students can do to start studying earlier, Professor Raposa stated that “Students can utilize the time, while working, to continually review, memorize, and practice. That is why we need cooperation with commercial bar prep companies to allow students early start date and access who are taking a bar exam in the fall.”
